ROCCO'S JUNE COZY REVIEWS!

Ma-Row!  Here are my June cozy reviews!

CLAUSE OF DEATH

LORNA BARRETT

A BOOKTOWN MYSTERY

BERKLEY/HC/JUNE 7, 2022

FIVE PAWS

Bookstore owner Tricia Miles tries to open a new chapter in life, but murder mars the pages in the latest entry to Lorna Barrett's New York Times bestselling Booktown series.

Tricia Miles and her sister, Angelica, are the co-presidents of the Stoneham Chamber of Commerce. Things are changing in the booktown, and some merchants would say not for the better. They grumble that too many non-book-related stores are moving into the village, taking up the most visible storefronts on Main Street, diluting the “Booktown” moniker. Of course, the members with other businesses, like the latest, The Bee’s Knees, are fine with other businesses moving in. No matter what side of the argument they're on, all the business owners agree on one thing: Tricia and Angelica are to blame.

Still, it's a pretty typical day in the life of a small-town Chamber of Commerce until one of the disgruntled bookstore owners is killed—Eli Meier from The Inner Light Bookstore, the most vocal of the Chamber complainers. He sold religious and other spiritual books, but also stocked books on wild conspiracy theories and sold incense, crystals, etc. Eli had never been a member of the Chamber until Angelica recently convinced him to join. He hit on her and she, having good taste, turned him down. He hounded (but not stalked) her, and some might think that was a motive for murder.

Stoneham's new police chief is an old friend of Tricia's, but that doesn't mean he's going to go easy on her sister. One might even say that he's going to throw the book at her.

We enjoy this quirky, delightful series that never fails to bring a twist or a surprise.  Fans new and old alike will enjoy seeing Tricia get her sister out of hot water!  Five Paws!

MURDER IS NO PICNIC
CAPE COD FOODIE MYSTERY
AMY PERSHING
BERKLEY/MMPB/JUNE 7, 2022
When a celebrity chef is found dead, Samantha Barnes, the "Cape Cod Foodie", finds her search for the world's best blueberry buckle turning into a search for a killer

The Fourth of July is coming, and for professional food lover Samantha Barnes, it’s all about the picnic. Okay, and the fireworks. And the parade. But mostly the picnic. What could be better than a DIY clambake followed by the best blueberry buckle in the world? Sam has finally found the perfect recipe in the kitchen of Clara Foster, famed cookbook author and retired restaurateur, and she’s thrilled when Clara agrees to a buckle baking lesson.

But when Clara dies in a house fire blamed on carelessness in the kitchen, Sam doesn’t believe it. Unfortunately, her doubts set in motion an investigation pointing to the new owner of Clara’s legendary restaurant—and a cousin of Sam’s harbormaster boyfriend.  So, in between researching the Cape’s best lobster rolls and planning her clambake, Sam needs to find Clara's killer before the fireworks really start....

Food and mysteries are two of our favorite things!  Amy Pershing has created a memorable heroine in Samantha Barnes, and this third entry in the series does not disappoint. Hopefully there will be more!

A delightful new story from a New York Times bestselling author perfect for fans of Joanne Fluke’s Hannah Swensen Mystery series! In this page-turning new book, entertaining guru Sophie Winston is faced with a midsummer nightmare when a celebration in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, is the appetizer for murder…

Old Town’s midsummer festivities are getting a tasty addition this year. To coincide with a public performance of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Bobbie Sue Bodoin, the Queen of Cheesecake, has hired Sophie to organize a dinner with a dessert buffet on the waterfront. Bobbie Sue’s homegrown company is thriving, and since her baking dish overfloweth, she wants to reward her employees.

Bobbie Sue has only one menu demand: no cheesecake! But her specialty isn’t the only thing missing from the evening—Tate, Bobbie Sue’s husband, is too, much to her annoyance. Next morning, however, Tate’s dead body is discovered. Bobbie Sue insists she didn’t kick her spouse to the curb, and begs for Sophie’s help finding the real killer. Digging in, Sophie discovers an assortment of Old Town locals who all had reason to want a piece of Tate. Can she gather together the crumbs the killer left behind in time to prevent a second helping of murder?
we are SO glad that Kensington picked up this series!  We love Sophie and the entire cast of nutty characters that inhabit Old Town!  15th in the series, but can be read as a standalone.  Five Paws!!!!1

ROCCO interviews author Amy Pershing!

MA-Row!  Today my guest is author Amy Pershing!

Amy Pershing, who spent every summer of her childhood on Cape Cod, was an editor, a restaurant reviewer and a journalist before writing the Cape Cod Foodie mysteries, including A Side of Murder -- which Elizabeth Gilbert called “the freshest, funniest mystery I have ever read” -- and An Eggnog to Die For  -- which Kirkus Reviews gave a starred review, saying, "A delightful sleuth, a complex mystery, and lovingly described cuisine: a winner for both foodies and mystery mavens." The third book in the series, Murder Is No Picnic, also received a starred review from Kirkus, which wrote: “A clever, empathetic and totally believable heroine sets this fine cozy above the competition.

  1. Tell us a little about your background

I’m only recently a fiction writer, but I’ve pretty much always written for a living, first as a book editor, then as a journalist in Rome, then as restaurant reviewer in New York, then as a financial journalist in New York, and finally as the head of employee communications for a major Wall Street firm.  It was a great way to hone my craft, but I’ve got to say, nothing, but nothing, beats writing fiction!

Also, I spent every summer of my childhood on Cape Cod.  It was magical.  We kicked off our shoes the minute we hit the sandy soil of our little cottage by the bay and we did not put them back on until September.  So I always hoped I could someday share Cape Cod in a book and, as a mystery addict, I really hoped it would be in a mystery.  Thus, the Cape Cod Foodie series is a dream come true for me.

  1. Tell us a bit about your latest book

MURDER IS NO PICNIC is the latest in the Cape Cod Foodie mysteries series featuring Sam Barnes, a disgraced but resilient ex-chef and the world’s most reluctant YouTube star. While Sam tries to balance her new job as the local paper’s “Cape Cod Foodie” with her complicated love life, a posse of just-slightly-odd friends, a falling-down house and a ginormous dog, she also discovers a new talent – a propensity for falling over dead bodies … and for solving crime.

In MURDER IS NO PICNIC, the Fourth of July is coming, and for Sam, it’s all about the picnic.

So, in between researching the Cape’s best lobster rolls and planning her clambake, Sam needs to find Clara’s killer before the fireworks really start….

  1. How do you construct your plots? Do you outline or do you write “by the seat of your pants”?

Because I write twisty mysteries that require clues strategically scattered about and all loose ends tied up, I always start with a detailed outline of about 30 pages before I even start the real writing. The outline process is no fun at all, but the writing – that is pure joy.

  1. Which do you consider more important, plot or character?

Definitely character, particularly the character of Sam. Sam is everything I’m not. Tall (really tall, like, over-six-feet-tall kind of tall), brave (wait until you see her take on the guy who kicks her dog), funny and snarky (I am boringly polite), and a terrific cook (I’m good, but I’m not chef-level good). On the other hand, and this is where we’re soul sisters, she believes in the primary importance of food, friends and family. Cooking for and/or sharing a meal with people you love is, in my opinion, one of life’s great gifts.

  1. What is a typical workday for you and how many hours a day (or week) do you devote to writing?

I write every weekday and (depending on what deadline I’m under!) sometimes on the weekends as well. I usually wake up in the early hours of the morning and simply allow my mind to float over what I might be writing that day. Then I’m at my desk by 6 a.m. and writing (or editing or rewriting) until noon. At which point my brain shuts down entirely!

  1. If you could take only three books with you for a year-long writing retreat in a gorgeous setting with no library, which three would you take?

Classic Italian Cooking by Marcella Hazan; The Habit of Being: The Letters of Flannery O’Connor; and Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose (592 pages!)

  1. What’s one thing your readers would be surprised to find out about you?

I’m really only a so-so cook, at least in my own estimation (others have been more complimentary). But I love reading about food (I read cookbooks, for Pete’s sake!), and researching food and cooking food (so-so is just fine by He Who Must Be Fed) and, most of all, eating food. Especially with friends!

Also, I studied Classical Archaeology in college. Go figure.

  1. Where can we learn more about you and your books?

I worked my buns off on my author website (amypershingauthor.com), so I humbly suggest you start there. You will find all sorts of fun stuff about me and my books as well as suggestions for other Cape Cod books to read, recipes to try and how to sign up for my newsletter!

ROCCO’s Fast Five:

  • What’s something that’s always in your fridge?

A chunk of real parmesan cheese (parmigiano reggiano) to grate over everything

  • What is your favorite movie quote

“I like you very much. Just as you are.” Mark Darcy to Bridget Jones in Bridget Jones’s Diary

  • What food do you wish was calorie free

Wine

  • What book was your favorite growing up?

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

  • What is something you are really bad at?

Heights. I never seem to remember that I hate them. I once climbed to the top of Giotto’s tower in Florence, walked over to the railing, looked down, and then promptly lay down flat on the floor and crawled on my belly back to the stairway

Thanks for a great interview, Amy!

Berkley will giveaway a copy of MURDER IS NO PICNIC to one lucky commenter!  To enter, just leave a comment with your name and e-mail address!  US entries only please.  Contest ends midnight, June 10!

In Callie’s search for answers, she enlists the help of some beloved books and several new friends, including the handsome local martial arts instructor, Toby Dodge. ROCCO reviews ONE OF US and interviews author Lorie Lewis Ham

ROCCO’s REVIEW

ONE OF US

LORIE LEWIS-HAM

Kindle/Paperback/Amazon

Five Stars

At 35, children’s book author Roxi Carlucci finds herself starting over again after her publisher drops her book series. With no income, she has to pack up her life on the California Coast, along with her pet rat Merlin, and move in with her cousin, P.I. Stephen Carlucci, who lives in Fresno, CA. The one redeeming factor is that Stephen lives in the Tower District—the cultural oasis of Fresno.

Stephen talks Roxi into helping out with a community theatre production, which is also a fundraiser for a local animal rescue. Then someone is murdered during a rehearsal in the locked theatre, and now she and Stephen are hired to find the killer. Can they stop the killer before they strike again? The killer has to be one of Roxi’s new acquaintances since the theatre was locked at the time of the murder, but no one seems to have a motive. How can they solve a murder without a motive? Could the local gossip website hold any clues?

This is just the type of book we love....a plucky heroine starting over, an animal rescue, a murder in a locked theatre---could it get any more thrilling!  Lori Lewis-Ham is off to a great start with this series, which kept me turning pages until the final clue was revealed.  Definitely a five paws up...and BTW, you will fall in love with Merlin. Reminds me of a certain cat named Nick.......

and now, ROCCO interviews Lorie Lewis-Ham!

  1. Tell us a little about your background-

Answer: My background in writing goes way back. I have been writing ever since I was able to write my first sentence. My first song and poem were published when I was 13, and I have published many short stories and articles through the years, worked for a local newspaper off and on, and have published 6 mystery novels-the latest of which came out in 2021. For the past 12 years, I have been the editor-in-chief and publisher of Kings River Life Magazine, and produced Mysteryrat’s Maze Podcast for the past 4 years.

  1. Tell us a bit about your latest book

Answer: My latest book, One of Us, is the first in a brand new series called the Tower District Mysteries. Here is the back cover blurb-

Stephen talks Roxi into helping out with a community theatre production, which is also a
fundraiser for a local animal rescue.

  1. How do you “get to know” your characters before and while you’re writing the books?

Answer: I start out with some basic ideas and then build on them as I work on the first draft—the characters kind of develop as the story does. My main character Roxi though I have been working on for years, she made her first appearance in the last book of my other series, “The Final Note,” which came out 12 years ago. I have several pages of information on her but that too grew and changed as I wrote the first book. The main character in my first series was a lot like me, I wanted Roxi to be different. So I’m short she is tall, and she is much braver and more of a risk taker than I am.

  1. How do you construct your plots? Do you outline or do you write “by the seat of your pants”?

Answer: Definitely a pantser!

  1. Which do you consider more important, plot or character?

Answer: As a reader I think the main character is the most important—if I don’t care about them and find them interesting then I won’t keep reading in most cases. However, as a writer I would say they are almost equal. Even the best character in the world can’t carry a boring plot.

  1. What are you working on now and what are your future writing plans?

Answer: I am working on the second book in my series that I hope will be out next year. I don’t have a title yet but it is set at Halloween and involves a mystery book festival.

My hope is to keep writing Roxi books for some time.

  1. What’s one thing your readers would be surprised to find out about you?

Answer: Well if they are new to my writing with this book (I took a 12 year break from writing mysteries) then they may not know that I used to be a gospel singer. I started when I was 12 and sang until about ten years ago. I also wrote most of my own songs.

  1. Where can we learn more about you and your books?

Answer: You can learn all about my book on my website. There are review quotes, links to purchase it and other info https://www.mysteryrat.com/

ROCCO’s Fast Five:

  • What skill have you always wanted to learn? Martial Arts

But things go from bad to worse when an unexpected death makes Kari the main suspect in a murder investigation. Will she and Queenie be able to find the real killer and keep the home they’ve built at the sanctuary safe, or is their string of luck finally tapped out?

Ma-Row!  Our guest today is cozy mystery author Deborah Blake!

Deborah Blake
is the author of the Baba Yaga Series from Berkley (Wickedly Dangerous, Wickedly Wonderful, Wickedly Powerful), as well as the Broken Rider Series, and the Veiled Magic series. The Catskills Pet Rescue books are her first cozy mysteries.  She has also published thirteen books on modern witchcraft with Llewellyn Worldwide, along with a tarot and an oracle deck. She lives in a 130-year-old farmhouse in rural upstate New York with various cats who supervise all her activities, both magical and mundane. (Photo credit: Bobbie Hodges)

Me-ow!  Welcome, Deborah!

  1. Tell us a little about your background.

I have degrees in Psychology, Theater, and Secondary English Education and therefore spent the last 23 years co-founding then running an artists’ cooperative shop. I juggled both that and the writing for a long time before finally leaving earlier this year for focus on being a full-time writer. I’ve lived in beautiful upstate New York my entire life.

  1. Tell us a bit about your latest book.

Claws for Suspicion is the third book in my Catskills Pet Rescue cozy mystery series. The series was inspired by a local rescue organization where I got three of my five current cats, as well as by my love of animals in general. It has mystery, humor, a bit of romance, and of course, a lot of adorable cats and dogs, including the kitten Queenie who is the star of the series.

  1. How do you “get to know” your characters before and while you’re writing the books?

I write up character info and they tend to come to me as I do it. Although I admit that some of my characters (not the protagonists, but some secondary characters) are inspired by folks I really know.

  1. How do you construct your plots? Do you outline or do you write “by the seat of your pants”?

I have been an outliner since my third book, and now that I’m writing cozy mysteries, outlining is even more important. Mysteries don’t lend themselves to seat of the pants writing.

  1. Do you have an “How I got my agent” story you want to share?

It took me two years, three books, and sixty-seven rejections (many of them for partials or fulls) before I got my agent. She was completely worth the wait. When she started reading the book that eventually got me signed, she was in the middle of wedding planning and a visit from her future in-laws, so she emailed me and said she probably couldn’t finish reading until Monday. (This was on a Friday afternoon.) On Saturday morning, she emailed again and said she’d finished the book and loved it, and please not to sign with anyone else until she could talk to me on Monday. It was a wonderful moment.

  1. What are you working on now and what are your future writing plans?

I’m mostly focusing on promotion for the upcoming third book in my cozy mystery series, and trying to figure out what I’m going to write next.

  1. If you could take only three books with your for a year-long writing retreat in a gorgeous setting with no library, which three would you take?

Any three books by Jennifer Crusie.

  1. What advice do you have to offer to an aspiring author?

Never give up. It can be a tough journey, and a discouraging industry, but you never know when you are right around the corner from the “yes” you’ve been waiting for.

  1. Where can we learn more about you and your books?

My website is www.deborahblakeauthor.com and I’m also on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, usually posting pictures of cats.

ROCCO’s Fast Five:

  • What song do you like to sing along to?

I actually sing along to most of the songs I like. Since I listen to music while I’m taking my walks, I suspect that makes me look quite odd. But my favorite to sing along to is a song by Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin) and the Steep Canyon Rangers, called “Atheists Don’t Got No Songs.”

  • What’s something that’s always in your fridge?

Beer (What—I’m a writer.)

  • What’s the last thing you splurged on?

Really good chocolate. (What—I’m a writer. And yes, that’s my excuse for everything.)

  • What’s your preference for grocery shopping:  In store or online In store?

I don’t trust anyone else to pick out the perfect avocado for me.

  • What is your favorite movie quote?

“Bye, bye, boys. Have fun storming the castle.” (Princess Bride)

The ghost of a recently deceased chocolatier believes he was murdered, and it's up to young witch Brynn Warren to use her magical gifts and old-fashioned sleuthing skills to find out how he really met his bitter end in this enchanting new Evenfall Witches B&B Mystery.

After spending months unable to use her powers, Brynn Warren is once again using her gift and working at her family's bed-and-breakfast. Her heart is full, and although one of her aunts wonders if it might be a little more full with a bit of romance in her life, Brynn is certain that finding love again is not in her future. In fact, she can’t imagine anyone being more certain of anything…except for maybe, the recently deceased Mortimer Sweete. He’s certain he’s been murdered, and he wants Brynn’s help to bring his killer to justice.

Mort is positive he knows who killed him: his business partner's wife, Cookie, who had been trying to get them to sell the candy shop for months. But Brynn doesn't share his conviction. After all, the coroner ruled his death natural causes, and Mort did have health problems in life. But with Cookie putting up a For Sale sign for the shop already, Brynn knows she can't just let it go.

Trying to solve a might-be murder while attempting to stop her aunt from meddling in her personal life seems like a recipe for disaster. If Brynn wants to bring Mort's spirit peace, she'll have to rely on all her skills—both magical and mundane—to uncover the truth.

Business is booming for Libby Beckett and her fabulous Maryland shop, aptly named Y.A.R.N., but when a town festival brings a fatality with it, Libby gets all tangled up in murder.

As spring comes to Collinstown, the village launches a food festival to draw a new group of tourists. Libby, proud owner of Y.A.R.N., has planned a yarn event to provide an alternative option to a foodie weekend. Artisan fiber dyer Julie Wilson—known for her work with animal-friendly, plant-based knitting fibers such as bamboo and hemp as well as her brilliant use of color—will hopefully draw a crowd with a special dyeing workshop.

The festival begins, but it draws more than crowds. First a flock of sheep parades down the street, herded by farmers protesting Julie’s antiwool stance. Then Julie’s celebrity chef sister appears, and the siblings resume a long-standing rivalry. Despite all this, Julie’s workshop has sold out. Libby is thrilled, and they’re preparing for a full house. But the night before the event, Julie is found alone in the warehouse event space—dead. The witty “Watch Julie Wilson Dye” workshop title now has a terrible new meaning—and it’s up to Libby to catch a crafty killer.

Crafts, particularly knitting, are always popular and the author has created a spunky heroine in Libby Beckett!  A good sequel to a promising first entry. Four paws.

But when Kiera is invited to peruse Barbreck’s extensive art collection, she is disturbed to discover that one of his most priceless paintings seems to be a forgery. The marquess’s furious reaction when she dares to mention it leaves her shaken and the entire house shocked. For it turns out that this is not the first time the word forgery has been uttered in connection with the Barbreck household.

Matters turn more ominous when a maid from a neighboring estate is found murdered  where the forged painting hangs. Is her death connected to the forgeries, perhaps a grisly warning of what awaits those who dare to probe deeper? With unknown entities aligned against them, Kiera and Gage are forced to confront the fact that they may have underestimated their opponent.
